Re: Naming Help

May 6, 2009 by lucinda

I'm a bit lazy, so I've only skim read the resposnes to your original post Leshia, but my suggestion is that you steer well clear of names that have inaccessible spellings or are unpronouncable by the average speaker of English. If you want to increase your readership, and not alienate potential readers stick to names which reflect the potential of your character. Storm,(bringer) Heart (slayer)etc have been made cliche by the myriad of writers before you...look to the metaphorical/symbolic....and then beyond/within/behind that. But before you get carried away by this..................
I never remember a character's name..I remember what they do/say/are.

Call them Tim, Susan................it doesn't matter.plot/conflict/charaterisation/theme drive a story..not the names of the characters. They play a part, but don't get hung up on them.

I'm keen to work with you on this, but I'm not clear on the parameters. Am I to understand you ask for a range of stories using similar/same? characters, and the same setting....or same charcaters different setting? Are all contributions to be of the fantasy genre, or are we open to using same charcters/setting in another genre?

Re: Poll: How often do you write?

I'd like to add another option to your poll.

Often/As much as life allows. For now it's just for me, but I'd like to share in a supportive forum.

Re: Invites

Love your work Drexes. I have visited a few sites of late looking for a place to discuss books, articles, poetry ideas etc, and have found many of them populated by people who either have an agenda ie. to sell something (sometimes themselves) or who have little to offer in terms of informed reflection on texts, or ( to be honest pretty crappy) writing.
I admire the fact that you have put this site together, and appreciate the intent and effort it requires to do so.
I am, as I have said in another post, discouraged by the fact that little action has gone on here for some months, but am happy to support your efforts. I will continue to post and, if I get some encouragement, recommend the site to my friends.
Good luck in your endeavours.

Re: Twilight...

May 6, 2009 by lucinda

Leshia, I've read the whole series, and recently viewed the feature film Twilight. I enjoyed the first book, and read the rest out of a sense of obligation because my daughter, and several of my students are/were reading them. The film version is okay but badly directed, in my humble opinion. I, like you, am not a young adult by any stretch of the imagination, but I found Twilight to be a real 'page turner'. The sexual tension Meyer creates between Bella and Edward (and involving other characters later in the series) is beyond compare in my readings; reminiscent of my youth and poignantly expressed.

I feel a bit lost. I 'd like to rely to this forum, but I see the last post was made five months ago. Does this mean the forum is little used. I hate, having taken the time to respond in a considered manner to posts, getting no prompt reply. If this is a functioning thread please let me know before I invest my time and energy.
Kind regards..a newbie.
